More David Whitfield LIVE ...

Encouraged by the very favorable response to our David Whitfield Live CD (BREN 102), we are pleased to present this follow-up CD which also features David singing live in cabaret, theatre and on television.

The tracks on this CD include recordings from the famous Leeds City Varieties. Also included are tracks featuring David singing in cabaret – he was always very popular on the 60s and 70s club circuit – together with two tracks from one of his many Blackpool Theatre appearances.

David had a great rapport with an audience and, in fact, was quite a comedian, which stood him in good stead on the often difficult club circuit. His warmth and personality are very much evident on this CD.

The idea to produce a David Whitfield Live CD originated from a New Zealand television show featuring David in 1973. I was working in New Zealand at the time and recorded the programme on a very basic cassette recorder. The programme featured David singing in one of New Zealand’s many beautiful park settings. Unfortunately the quality of my recording was marred by background noise. However, I have managed to trace the original recordings used for the programme and, with the help of modern digital technology, it has been possible to recreate the television show as transmitted. We have included the full show on this CD as David was extremely popular in New Zealand and Australia.

Production of this CD would not have been possible without the help of David Whitfield fans who have kindly provided the material. Special thanks to Graham Hurry, a big fan of David, who in the 60s and 70s was able to attend many of David’s appearances throughout the UK. As a result he got to know David well and recorded many of his appearances, including the City Varieties show.
